How words are counted
A word is any run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words like "well-known" and contractions like "don't" count as one word, the same way Microsoft Word and Google Docs count them. Characters include spaces and punctuation; the second count leaves spaces out.
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute. Speaking time assumes about 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a speech or presentation.
